Panchakarma

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THAT SIMPLY HAVING A MASSAGE WITH AYURVEDIC OIL IS NOT AYURVEDIC TREATMENT. IF MASSAGE IS NOT PROVIDED WITH PROPER MEDICATED OILS BASED ON DIFFERENT PERSONAL FACTORS, IT CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS AT A LATER STAGE.

Ayurvedic Abhyanga (Massage)

The Ayurvedic doctor selects the ayurvedic oils based on your body type which is used in the massage. Dhara

Dhara is an Ayurvedic treatment method, which includes the application of a continuous stream of mildly warm oil to the body parts.

Shirodhara, or the dhara treatment given to head is most common. Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda medicine that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead (the ‘third eye’). The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water.

Shirodhara has been used to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière’s disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis.

Dhanyamladhara is dhara over different body parts other than head. The name of dhara varies with the kind of material used for the dhara.

Ellakizhi

Finely chopped herbal leaves and herbal powders are warmed in medicated oil and bundled in a poultice which is used for the fomentation massage. In cases of rheumatism and other diseases, fomentation in the affected area brings great relief. Ellakizhi promotes better circulation, relieves stress, and treats osteo-arthritis. It is also ministered to those with spondylosis and sports injuries resulting from soft tissue inflammations and joint pains.

Ayurvedic Udvartanam

This specialised massage uses ayurvedic powders or churnas to help reduce obesity, impart mobility to the joints and strengthen muscles. The most promising benefit is an all over slimming and toning effect on the body.

Choornaswedam

A linen bag filled with churna (medicated powder) is used for fomentation, the duration of which varies according to disease conditions. This is effective for ailments due to Vata and Kapha disorders as it produces a therapeutic sweat, which relieves neurological disorders, rheumatism and arthritis.

Nethra Tharpanam

This is a special Ayurvedic treatment to set right the degenerative changes in the retina and lens of the eyes, to strengthen the optic nerve, ciliary muscles, and to correct the refractive errors in diabetic retinopathy, etc.

Thalam

Application of medicated paste on the crown of the head is called Thalam. Thalams are of various types according to the nature of the ailment.

Pichu

Pichu is a palliative treatment for ailments of the head. A long piece of cloth (pichu) folded thickly and broader than the forehead is fixed around the head just above the ear level. A hole nearly one and a half inches wide is made in the front of the band. After preparatory procedures like an oil massage, the prescribed oil is applied on the head. A piece of cotton wad drenched in medicated oil is placed in the hole and allowed to remain there for some time. This process is repeated for a specific duration. Pichu, one of the Purvakarma therapy is considered effective for diseases of the cranial nerves arising from Vata disorder.

Vasti(External)

It involves holding warm ayurvedic oils on the affected areas, that help immensely in cases of lower back problems, cervical problems, arthritic knees and in cases of hypertension and cardiac related conditions.

Sirovasthi

In this type of Dhara treatment medicated milk or oil is poured over the forehead in a rhythmatic manner. It is used in psychosomatic diseases like psoriasis with very good results. It also cures headache, giddiness, pain and burning sensations of the palms and feet, diseases of eyes, ears, nose and throat. It is an excellent cure for chronic insomnia. Those patients suffering from insomnia will have sound sleep even while administering the therapy.

Kati Vasti

This is a special ayurvedic treatment for lower backache or sciatica of different etiology. Warm ayurvedic oil is held on affected area on the lumbosacral region.

GrevaVasti

This is a special ayurvedic treatment for different kinds of neck complaints including cervical spondylitis, I.V. disc prolapses, arthrosis, etc.

Janu Vasti

This is a special ayurvedic treatment for the knee joint conditions like arthritis, tendon injuries, sprain, etc.

HrudVasti

This is a special ayurvedic treatment for a variety of heart diseases including angina pectoris,.

Pizhichal

‘Pizhi’ means ‘Squeezing’ and ‘Chil’ means ‘Vigorous movement.’ It is a procedure of squeezing large quantities of warm medicated oil all over the body with one hand and massaging with the other hand, depending on the requirement of each body, as judged by the Ayurvedic Doctor.The oil is selected after careful analysis of the person’s character, body construction (physiological constitution of each individual), digestive power, etc.
When administered many times in succession is found to alleviate pains and is very invigorating. This is one of the best therapies for diseases caused by impaired functioning of the nervous system. This is a rejuvenation therapy as well and will prevent ageing scales and wrinkles. This therapy is also used to cure rheumatism and arthritis.

Ayurveda Steam Bath (UshmaSwedam)

This is a unique treatment and under this treatment leaves of medicinal plants are boiled and resulting steam is passed to the whole body. This treatment is helpful in to eliminate impurities from the body, reducing fat and also helpful in fighting with some skin diseases. This is also indicated as PURVAKARMA for Panchakarma procedures.

Navarakizhi/Shastika Shali Pinda Sweda

This is one of the most popular therapies used for the purpose of rejuvenation of the body. A bolus of Navara or Shastika rice cooked with milk and herbal decoctions is made into a fist-sized bundle called a kizhi which is used for fomentation. This is done after the application of medicated oil over the whole body and this induces a sweat. It has its proven efficacy and indicated in muscular disorders, neurological anomalies from paralysis to neuralgias, emaciation, and blood related disorders. This in healthy individuals gives a sedation effect, improves blood circulations and metabolism, makes body feels lighter and relaxed. It makes skin soft and gives special luster and glow. It is used not only as part of Panchakarma but also as an effective treatment for many diseases due to Vata disorders. This strengthening formulation helps combat neurological disorders, rheumatism, arthritis, and malnutrition of limbs.

Lepa

Herbal pastes are applied over the affected parts.
Usually done to reduce swelling, pain or inflammation of the joints. Also used to treat some skin diseases.

Shirolepam

This is the application of herbal preparations in paste over the hairy part of the head for 30 to 60 minutes. Ingredients of the paste vary according to the nature of the ailment. This is helpful in treating sleep disorders, headache, hemiplegia, facial paralysis, trigeminal neuralgia, hair falling, premature greying, dandruff, etc.

Sneha Panam

Snehapanam is an Ayurvedic therapeutic measure given to patients for the cure of gastroenterological ailments. Snehapanam is characterized by the oral intake of ghee (purified buttermilk) made from cow’s milk for internal purification before starting the panchakarma therapy (purva karma) or as a treatment.

Snehapanam is considered beneficial in curing different conditions like osteo-arthritis, certain skin diseases like psoriasis, chronic constipation, etc.

Karna Puran( Karnapooranam)

In Karna Puran or ear therapy, the ears are filled with herbo-mineral oils which lubricate the delicate filaments of the ear canal, dislodging impurities and sharpening hearing.
Karna Puran creates a feeling of deep restfulness and may be useful in treating insomnia. Earaches, deafness, ringing of the ears, headaches, giddiness, as well as tooth and gum diseases may benefit.

Vamanam And Virechanam

Major Body purification procedure in Panchakarma therapy. When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of bronchitis, cold, cough. Vamanam is administrated to eliminate the Kapha causing the excess mucus. All Kapha related diseases are cured by this therapy. This process requires good attention and skilled assistance. In chronic skin diseases like Psoriasis also vamanam is administered.

Vasti

Ayurvedic Vasti involves the introducing of liquids like medicated oils, herbal decoctions and milk through the perineum (through the anus, urinary meatus or vaginal orifice in women) in order to clean or heal the lower part of the body (below umbilical part). The toxins (ama) accumulated in the lower part of the body or the toxins pushed to the colon, urinary tract or reproductive tract by previous ayurvedic procedures like Oil-therapy (snehan) or Sweat-therapy (swedan) can be cleared with bastis.
